Primary school children and obesity

Increasingly kids are eating an unbalanced diet.

Kids are not getting the right nutrients to help them grow, concentrate at school and stay healthy in adult life.

More and more of children's daily food intake is snack based rather than meal based. Inevitably, this means a diet biased towards unhealthy foods.

Families and young people today simply don't know enough about food and nutrition, making it difficult for them to make better choices about their diet.

  The Noxious nuggets

Kids are getting fatter. 15% of all kids under 11 are now obese. Fatter children are more likely to stay obese into adulthood, leading to serious health problems. Scientists believe this may be the first generation to die before their parents due to ill health.

Teachers report that bad behaviour peaks around lunchtime, after kids have just eaten processed food high in sugar, salt, fat and a cocktail of other additives. Growing scientific evidence suggests that a junk food diet has a negative effect on behavior

Many kids of 15 can tell you about drugs but have never tasted celery or courgettes, let alone tell you where they are grown or how to cook them. Captain Carrot...Field Agent aims to teach younger children in an entertaining and exciting way how important good nutrition is to health, growth and concentration at school. It explains through games, puppetry, music and magic illusions what things are needed for a balanced diet and how some foods can provide it. That food comes from farms not packets.

Change has begun in most schools, but it can be a big battle persuading children try something new...

...Well now there is a new superhero dedicated to fighting the fats!
