Apples, Pears, Bananas

Ask the children to list as many fruits as they can.

Discuss why everyone needs to eat fruit, i.e. to help us grow, gives us vitamins, keep us healthy.

The children then suggest how much fruit they need to eat daily.

The children volunteer their favourite fruit.

Teacher then explains the rules of the game – running without touching anyone,

follow the directions and staying within the playing area.

  • When ‘apples’ are called the children run to here (e.g. touch a wall)
  • When ‘pears’ are called the children run there (point to a different area)
  • When any other fruit is called the children run on the spot.
  • When ‘bananas’ is called the children must freeze.

A child is out if they are caught not following the directions.

Teacher note:

This lesson’s focus skills are following directions, locomotor movements.

Movements can be varied , e.g. walk backwards, hop, skip, slide gallop, jump.

Carrots and Rabbits

Discuss what vegetables rabbits like to eat – carrots, lettuce, cabbage and other leafy green vegetables.

Ask the children to suggest reasons why rabbits need lots of vegetables.

Reinforce why people need vegetables too. Ask the children to identify where carrots live, i.e. under ground.

Equipment: ribbons or sashes or tags, rope and hoops or chalk.

Make as many ‘carrot holes’ as needed using hoops or ropes in a circle or circles

drawn with chalk.

Teacher then explains the rules of the game –

  • Two children are chosen to be rabbits. They wear ribbons or sashes.
  • The game begins when the rabbits call “yum, yum we need carrots”.
  • All the carrots run from their carrot holes into another carrot hole.
  • Only three carrots can be in each carrot hole.
  • Rabbits try to eat the carrots by tagging them before they reach the next
  •   carrot hole.

If a carrot is caught, the rabbit gives his/her sash to the carrot as they now become a rabbit.

Teacher note:

This lesson’s focus skills are running, dodging and alertness.

Game may be varied by starting with more than two rabbits
